Venice is one of the most beautiful and unique cities globally. This photography masterclass is designed to get the very best out of the location with two experienced professional landscape photographers and educators, Steve Gosling and Mark Banks. Their approach to the art of photography is very different and complementary, which will allow participants to explore visual concepts and techniques in various forms throughout the workshop.
December is a magical time of year to visit Venice as the run-up to Christmas makes for more unique images with far fewer tourists and more atmospheric photographs. In winter, Venice is prone to small areas of flooding called 'Aqua Alta', which creates excellent photographic potential and low-lying mist generated from the lagoon adding extra drama and atmosphere. To take advantage of this, we will find ourselves shooting during the day and early evening once dark when Venice's streets light up with the soft, warm glow from the ornate Venetian street lamps. There will also be the opportunity for pre-breakfast dawn shoots for those who wish to take part, too. Both Steve and Mark will be on hand throughout the workshop, offering advice on all aspects of composition and technique so that you return home with beautiful images.
This 7 night/6 day workshop is open to photographers looking for a concentrated & fully immersive experience to help them develop their personal vision and style of photography. Our aim will be to help participants move beyond photographing simply what they see but also communicate what they feel through their images.
We will stay at The Hotel Ala, a beautiful hotel conveniently situated a short walk from Piazza San Marco and the Accademia Bridge as well as being within 50 yards of a Vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal. This will give us a convenient base from which to explore this magical, mysterious, romantic and beautiful city. All rooms will be sole occupancy and have full en-suite facilities.
Places are strictly limited to 8 people. This enables us to offer an intensive event where we will work closely with the participants to ensure that the learning experience is fully tailored to their individual and unique needs.
Accommodation at the Hotel Ala (on a bed and breakfast basis) is included in the cost of the workshop. Lunches and dinners are not included (to allow for maximum flexibility and to enable participants to choose venues that suit their tastes and budget). However, we will encourage the group to have dinner together each evening so we can share our experiences of the day.
Here is a list of recommended equipment you should bring…
Although many miles south of the UK, Venice can still be chilly in December, so warm, waterproof clothing is required.
A moderate level of fitness is required for this workshop. Although there are no hills in Venice there are many bridges with shallow steps to climb up and down.
Flights are not included in the price of this workshop, so please consult your local international airport for details to Marco Polo airport. From here, you can catch a Vaporetto or water taxi to the Grand Canal. Full Hotel details and Vaporetto stops will be issued nearer the time.
Mark has public liability insurance for negligence caused by him, which is underwritten by Chubb Insurance Company of Europe Ltd. You are strongly recommended to take out travel insurance in case of illness, accident, cancellation or any other factor outside of Mark's control (Terms and conditions apply - please contact Mark for written details).
I just wanted to say thank you for a great workshop in Glencoe, despite the weather! You are an excellent workshop leader with a high degree of professionalism, a methodical approach to landscape photography and the ability to adapt your teaching to your clients and the weather.

Thank you so much for such an inspirational day yesterday and for all your patience! I love my prints, thank you! I felt as though I achieved what I had set out to do and learn the principles of printing and look forward to giving things a go myself.

Hi Mark, Just a note to thank you again for such a wonderful week in so many respects. I so enjoyed the locations and the photography. Lots to process and think about again and some new exciting things to try. Your tuition and attention to detail is much appreciated and I always feel inspired again to get out with my camera. See you before too long in Yorkshire.

"Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn."
“Mark Banks is quite simply one of the best teachers of photography I have ever met. His secret is an apparently endless supply of patience, and an acute analytical approach to developing systematic problem-solving tactics in photography, which he makes effortless and fun to learn, whether in the field or in the editing suite. Mark’s artistry, empathy, kindness and charm mean he is always a joy to work with, or to be taught by.”
