"Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn."

~ Benjamin Franklin

“Mark Banks is quite simply one of the best teachers of photography I have ever met. His secret is an apparently endless supply of patience, and an acute analytical approach to developing systematic problem-solving tactics in photography, which he makes effortless and fun to learn, whether in the field or in the editing suite. Mark’s artistry, empathy, kindness and charm mean he is always a joy to work with, or to be taught by.”

~ Joe Cornish

He is one of the best educators I have ever worked with, regardless of discipline…I will come back in a heartbeat, to take other workshops at the gallery that Mr Banks is conducting.”

~ Richard F, Massachusetts, USA

Callanish Stones, Isle of Lewis, Landscape Photography Tuition

Harris & Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

10th - 16th March 2019 - 1 Place Remaining

NEW DATE ADDED: 2nd - 8th October 2019

It’s no surprise to those who visit Scotland that it repeatedly gets nominated as the best place in the UK for landscape photography. With mountains aplenty and picturesque lochs, islands, shorelines, rivers, waterfalls and woodland there really is no better place to learn about - and improve your landscape photography skills.

The Isles of Harris & Lewis are in fact all one island, with Lewis to the North with its hard granite-like moonscape terrain amid a myriad of small lochans and dramatic and craggy coastline. To the south is Harris, with its sweeping turquoise shoreline and coral beaches of Luskentyre, Seilebost, Ushinish and others. This workshop will be based in Tarbert in the centre of the Island, which is perfectly placed for easy access to the North and South. We will explore many beautiful locations around the Island as well as discovering old lighthouses and long-abandoned sheilings - many of which still have contents inside as if the owners just left one day, never to come back.

For those also interested in wildlife, you will find a bounty of it on Harris & Lewis including sea-eagles, golden eagles, otters, stags and deer plus many other species. We will also visit the Callanish Stones, the famous standing stones built near the end of the Neolithic period over 4000 years ago.

As there is a maximum of just 4 people on this workshop there will be plenty of one-to-one tuition time, which will guarantee you leaving with the most beautiful images of this most amazing Hebridean Island.

Mark will also be on hand to help with processing your images either using Mark's laptop or your own. We will discuss all things photographic and you are also invited to bring along some prints for us to discuss in an informal setting at the Hotel.

Participants will arrive on the Sunday by plane or ferry prior to the workshop starting on Monday 11th. As this is a full 5-day workshop there will be plenty of time for one-to-one tuition and to discuss photography at whatever level you are - beginner or experienced amateur. The workshop will officially close on Friday evening with a de-brief of your experience over celebratory drinks. Participants will then check out on the Saturday morning after breakfast.

For the October workshop, you will arrive on Tuesday 1st October and the workshop will commence on Wednesday 2nd October. The workshop will officially close on Monday 7th October and you will depart on Tuesday 8th October.

Camera Equipment

Here is a list of recommended equipment you should bring…

  • Camera body and a selection of lenses that ideally cover wide angle to medium telephoto (for instance 25mm to 200mm).
  • At least two camera batteries
  • Tripod
  • Hot-shoe spirit level (if your camera has a level indicator built in that’s fine).
  • A small set of graduated filters (please contact Mark if you need further help on which filters to bring).
  • Lens cloth

You may also bring with you a laptop computer for processing images taken during the workshop with guidance from Mark.

The Scottish weather can be hostile at the best of times (which is why it’s so good for landscape photography) therefore it’s important to be equipped with the correct clothing.

  • Plenty of layers to keep warm
  • Hat
  • Gloves
  • Waterproof coat
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Walking wellingtons and/or boots
  • Umbrella

Fitness Level - Easy | Moderate | Challenging

A Moderate level of fitness is required for this workshop - but all locations have been carefully selected for their stunning views, safety, convenience and ease of access.

Getting there

By Road & Ferry

The most convenient ferry crossing is from Uig on the Isle of Skye. There is a good road network to Uig - but it would be wise to include, and allow for, an overnight stay en-route if you plan on travelling a long distance.

By Plane

Stornoway has an airport which regularly runs services from other UK airports - but mainly Inverness, with connecting flights via there. Mark will be offering a collection service on the Sunday from Stornoway to the Hotel (Specificied Flight Time). He will also drop you off back at the airport on the morning of 16th March. Please contact Mark before booking your flight to discuss exact timings first.
