"Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn."

~ Benjamin Franklin

“Mark Banks is quite simply one of the best teachers of photography I have ever met. His secret is an apparently endless supply of patience, and an acute analytical approach to developing systematic problem-solving tactics in photography, which he makes effortless and fun to learn, whether in the field or in the editing suite. Mark’s artistry, empathy, kindness and charm mean he is always a joy to work with, or to be taught by.”

~ Joe Cornish

He is one of the best educators I have ever worked with, regardless of discipline…I will come back in a heartbeat, to take other workshops at the gallery that Mr Banks is conducting.”

~ Mr R Fosler, Massachusetts, USA

"I just wanted to thank you once again for the Robin Hood’s Bay course last week. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but more than that I left with a far greater confidence in my compositional abilities, and a decent basic knowledge of Lightroom. The location, accommodation and organisation were first-rate, and your maxim of always considering the composition and only later considering whether you could pull it off resounded."

~ Mr N Farrimond, London

The day actually relighted my interest in going out locally.

~ Mr M Taylor, Leeds

Mark not only has an extensive knowledge of photography and Lightroom and a keen eye for making a good picture, he also has the essential skill of all good trainers - the ability to match himself to his client and their way of working and learning. He has combed out the tangles of my (self-taught) Lightroom set-up, shown me how to use the tools properly and effectively, and got me excited about making the most of my pictures. I wish I had known about his tutorials when I first started out!

~ Mrs Carol C, York

Lake District
5 Day Photography Workshop

24th - 28th September 2018 - FULLY BOOKED

The Lake District is a wonderful place for landscape photography at any time of the year but late Summer is a particularly photogenic and dynamic time to visit. During our time there we will photograph around the lakes of Grasmere & Rydal Water as well as travelling further afield to Derwentwater and the Langdales.

Mark will also offer an opportunity for you to take part in a Portfolio Review session where you can bring along some of your images for constructive comment and critique. On evenings (or if the weather is a little inclement), participants may also bring along their laptop computers for advice on post-production tips and techniques too using Adobe Lightroom Classic software.

We will be based at The Grand at Grasmere centrally located to visit the surrounding lakes and fells. Although accommodation isn't provided as part of the workshop (I sometimes like to give people the flexibility to make their own arrangements according to their taste and budget) I do encourage participants to stay in the vicinity of Grasmere.

Camera Equipment

Here is a list of recommended equipment you should bring…

  • Camera body and a selection of lenses that ideally cover wide angle to medium telephoto (for instance 25mm to 200mm).
  • At least two camera batteries
  • Tripod
  • Hot-shoe spirit level (if your camera has a level indicator built in that’s fine).
  • A small set of graduated filters (please contact Mark if you need further help on which filters to bring).
  • Lens cloth

You may also bring with you a laptop computer for processing images taken during the workshop with guidance from Mark.
