It’s no surprise to those who visit Scotland that it repeatedly gets nominated as the best place in the UK for landscape photography. With mountains aplenty and picturesque lochs, islands, shorelines, rivers, waterfalls and woodland there really is no better place to learn about - and improve your landscape photography skills.
Due to the more inclement weather that the Scottish Highlands experiences all year-round, Torridon and Wester-Ross offer some of the most spectacular autumn colour in the UK. Along with magical, soft light at this time of year, prepare to be punch-drunk on colour!
This workshop will be based in Gairloch in the Scottish Highlands. In order to get the maximum 5 days out of this workshop, you will arrive the evening prior to the workshop on Sunday 9th October. The workshop will commence on the Monday morning after breakfast when I will start with an introductory talk before opening the floor to any questions.
For the next five days, you will be transported to numerous amazing locations around the area where I will help you explore composition and technical skills in order to make successful landscape images. There will be opportunities for photography throughout the entire day due to the time of year and I will be on hand to answer any questions and issues you may be experiencing throughout. There will also be time for processing your images using my laptop and a large 27" screen where I will explain exactly how to get the best out of your images using Adobe Lightroom Classic software.
As this workshop is limited to just 4 participants there will be plenty of time for one-to-one tuition and to discuss photography at whatever level you are - beginner or experienced amateur.
On the final evening, we will have a de-brief of your experience over celebratory drinks. You will then depart on the Saturday morning after breakfast when the workshop comes to a close.
Here is a list of recommended equipment you should bring…
You may also bring with you a laptop computer for processing images taken during the workshop with guidance from Mark.
The Scottish Highlands can be dynamic at times (which is why it’s so good for landscape photography) therefore it’s important to be equipped with the correct clothing.
A moderate level of fitness is required for this workshop - but all locations have been carefully selected for their stunning views, safety, convenience and ease of access.
There is a good road network to Gairloch - but it would be wise to include, and allow for, an overnight stay en-route if you plan on travelling a long distance.
For those who require it, I will be offering transport from Inverness train station to Gairloch on the afternoon of Sunday 9th October by prior arrangement. I will also drop you off back at the station on the following Saturday morning. Please contact me before booking your train ticket to discuss the exact timings first. Check train times now at https://www.thetrainline.com/

I just wanted to say thank you for a great workshop in Glencoe, despite the weather! You are an excellent workshop leader with a high degree of professionalism, a methodical approach to landscape photography and the ability to adapt your teaching to your clients and the weather.

Thank you so much for such an inspirational day yesterday and for all your patience! I love my prints, thank you! I felt as though I achieved what I had set out to do and learn the principles of printing and look forward to giving things a go myself.

Hi Mark, Just a note to thank you again for such a wonderful week in so many respects. I so enjoyed the locations and the photography. Lots to process and think about again and some new exciting things to try. Your tuition and attention to detail is much appreciated and I always feel inspired again to get out with my camera. See you before too long in Yorkshire.

"Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn."
“Mark Banks is quite simply one of the best teachers of photography I have ever met. His secret is an apparently endless supply of patience, and an acute analytical approach to developing systematic problem-solving tactics in photography, which he makes effortless and fun to learn, whether in the field or in the editing suite. Mark’s artistry, empathy, kindness and charm mean he is always a joy to work with, or to be taught by.”
