The Yorkshire Dales is world-renowned for its stunning scenery, dry-stone walls, picturesque waterfalls, spring wildflowers and numerous barns. During this full 5-day (6-night) printing masterclass workshop you will be taken to some of the most beautiful locations in the Yorkshire Dales and receive tuition from two experienced professional landscape photographers, Sylvia Slavin and Mark Banks. Both tutors have intimate knowledge of the Yorkshire Dales as Sylvia lives there and Mark lives only 30 minutes away - providing a photographic playground for them both for many years!
As this is a printing masterclass, we will not only be taking photographs but we'll also be processing them in Adobe Lightroom before printing them onto premium fine-art papers including Japanese Bamboo and Washi papers, famous for their thick and thin designs with many imperfections designed to enhance your image. Learn how to get the best out of a print using Lightroom's print module including soft-proofing for consistent results. Where applicable we will also be using Fotospeed fine-art paper, too.
Mark and Sylvia will be on hand to guide you through processing and printing your images and you will leave with a selection of A4 & A3 prints taken during the workshop as a memento of your time with us.
In order to set up a printer and large monitor, we have secured four recently renovated and beautiful 1, 2 & 3 bedroom cottages all within the small, quiet village of Reeth in Swaledale. Each participant will be allocated a bedroom each upon booking. Bathrooms will be on a shared basis in each cottage, so please bring a bathrobe (no bedrooms are shared of course). The largest cottage will be used for printing and processing tuition.
In order to gain maximum tuition time, you will arrive the day prior to the start of the workshop and depart the day after the end of the workshop (accommodation for these nights is included in the price). For the next five days, participants will be transported by Sylvia and Mark to a number of locations around the area carefully selected for its photographic potential - including waterfalls, bluebell woods and bigger vistas found within both Swaledale and Wensleydale. In order to take advantage of our time, we have arranged to eat breakfast each morning at the 5-star Burgoyne luxury Hotel in the village. This is included in the cost of the workshop - as is a packed lunch provided each day also by the Hotel.
The workshop will officially close on the Friday evening over celebratory drinks at The Burgoyne. Participants will then depart on Saturday morning after breakfast.
Here is a list of recommended equipment you should bring…
If you have a macro lens, you might also find this useful - but this is optional.
You may also bring with you a laptop computer for processing images taken during the workshop with guidance from Mark. However, Mark will use his computer for the final printing process.
May is a difficult time to calculate what clothing to wear, but it's probably best to be safe by bringing...
The fitness level for this workshop is set at Easy as all locations have been carefully selected for their stunning views, safety, convenience and ease of access.
There is a good road network to Reeth, which can be reached from most parts of the UK within one day.
The nearest train station is Darlington or Northallerton, which is based on the East Coast rail link. Mark is offering a collection service from either of these stations for those who would find this more convenient.
The nearest airport is Durham Tees-Valley, which is just over an hour away from Reeth if you wish to hire a car.
Mark has public liability insurance for negligence caused by him, which is underwritten by Chubb Insurance Company of Europe Ltd. You are strongly recommended to take out travel insurance in case of illness, accident, cancellation or any other factor outside of Mark's control (Terms and conditions apply - please contact Mark for written details).
I just wanted to say thank you for a great workshop in Glencoe, despite the weather! You are an excellent workshop leader with a high degree of professionalism, a methodical approach to landscape photography and the ability to adapt your teaching to your clients and the weather.

Thank you so much for such an inspirational day yesterday and for all your patience! I love my prints, thank you! I felt as though I achieved what I had set out to do and learn the principles of printing and look forward to giving things a go myself.

Hi Mark, Just a note to thank you again for such a wonderful week in so many respects. I so enjoyed the locations and the photography. Lots to process and think about again and some new exciting things to try. Your tuition and attention to detail is much appreciated and I always feel inspired again to get out with my camera. See you before too long in Yorkshire.

"Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn."
“Mark Banks is quite simply one of the best teachers of photography I have ever met. His secret is an apparently endless supply of patience, and an acute analytical approach to developing systematic problem-solving tactics in photography, which he makes effortless and fun to learn, whether in the field or in the editing suite. Mark’s artistry, empathy, kindness and charm mean he is always a joy to work with, or to be taught by.”
