Woodland Masterclass: Glen Affric

23rd-29th October 2022
1 Place Remaining

It’s no surprise to those who visit Scotland that it repeatedly gets nominated as the best place in the UK for landscape photography. Glen Affric lies due west of Inverness and has a wealth of mixed woodland along its length. The hidden gems of Glen Affric and its neighbour, Glen Strathfarrar, explode with colour in autumn and, due to being less well-known, they offer landscape photographers a chance to make images that are very likely to be more unique. Soft mist is also highly likely at this time of year and tends to linger all day on occasions - weather permitting. Prepare to be punch-drunk on colour!

This masterclass workshop is a response to the many participants who generally find woodland photography difficult to make sense of. Literally 'seeing the woods for the trees' can be daunting and frustrating at times, so Mark will be on hand to discuss and advise you throughout each day - offering tips, solutions and the many techniques that can be adopted in such locations.  Therefore, this woodland masterclass workshop is limited to just 4 participants to allow maximum tuition time by Mark. We will be based in a hotel at the head of Glen Affric - conveniently situated for both Glen Affric and Glen Strathfarrar. Of course, there will also be opportunities for bigger vistas and we may even visit nearby Cromarty for a change of scenery to take in and photograph the many oil rigs in the loch.

The price of this workshop includes hotel accommodation and all meals (including a packed lunch whilst out on location)! You will arrive at the hotel on Sunday 23rd October for introductory drinks and an evening meal. The workshop will officially start the next day on Monday 24th October after breakfast when Mark will start with an introductory talk before opening the floor to any questions.

For the next five days, participants will be transported to numerous amazing locations around the area where Mark will be on hand throughout the day offering tuition. There will also be time for processing some of your images as part of the group early evening (or when the weather is particularly inclement) using Mark’s 27" screen and Adobe Lightroom Classic software.

As this workshop is limited to just 4 participants there will be plenty of time for 1-2-1 tuition and to discuss photography at whatever level you are - beginner or experienced amateur.

The workshop will officially end on the evening of Friday 28th October with a de-brief of your experience over celebratory drinks. Participants will check out on the morning of Saturday 29th October after breakfast.

I just wanted to say thank you for a great workshop in Glencoe, despite the weather! You are an excellent workshop leader with a high degree of professionalism, a methodical approach to landscape photography and the ability to adapt your teaching to your clients and the weather.

Thank you so much for such an inspirational day yesterday and for all your patience! I love my prints, thank you! I felt as though I achieved what I had set out to do and learn the principles of printing and look forward to giving things a go myself.

Hi Mark, Just a note to thank you again for such a wonderful week in so many respects. I so enjoyed the locations and the photography. Lots to process and think about again and some new exciting things to try. Your tuition and attention to detail is much appreciated and I always feel inspired again to get out with my camera. See you before too long in Yorkshire.

“Mark Banks is quite simply one of the best teachers of photography I have ever met. His secret is an apparently endless supply of patience, and an acute analytical approach to developing systematic problem-solving tactics in photography, which he makes effortless and fun to learn, whether in the field or in the editing suite. Mark’s artistry, empathy, kindness and charm mean he is always a joy to work with, or to be taught by.”
