Scarborough is a quintessential seaside town during the summer months but I prefer to photograph it in off-peak months when it strikes a more atmospheric and rather moody tone. Shooting in black and white adds to the overall tension and allows you to develop a more cohesive set of images exhibiting a less well-known side to this generally regarded bucolic location.
However, finding suitable compositions and getting the technical settings right is made all that much more difficult in winter weather and at night time, so I'll be on hand throughout the daylight hours and after dark to help you every step of the way as well as offering handy tips and tricks, too.
The workshop will start at 12.30 pm when Mark will discuss the format for the day before heading out to specific locations to shoot images during daylight. After dark, we will head into the town to shoot dark alleyways as well as around the promenade. We will aim to finish around 7.30 pm
We will meet at 12.30 am in front of The Spa in Scarborough - use postcode YO11 2HD (Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/nbm83PbT9iiMU9RJ8).
In order to maximise time on location, please bring a packed lunch and drinks to last the full day.
There are public toilets at the North end of South Bay, so you may wish to visit here first (as we will start at the southern end) - parking is normally free in winter but please check the nearby ticket machines.
Please wear clothing suitable for photography at this time of year. The promenade is flat but there is some uphill walking to the back alleyways but we will take things steadily throughout the day as there will be plenty of time.
Mark is a trained first-aider but is not allowed to administer medicine. Therefore, please bring with you all necessary medication including inhalers, epi-pens and any other medications you rely on.
Joining instructions and information will be sent nearer the time.
By booking and making a payment you are agreeing to accept my terms and conditions as set out in the link below.

I just wanted to say thank you for a great workshop in Glencoe, despite the weather! You are an excellent workshop leader with a high degree of professionalism, a methodical approach to landscape photography and the ability to adapt your teaching to your clients and the weather.

Thank you so much for such an inspirational day yesterday and for all your patience! I love my prints, thank you! I felt as though I achieved what I had set out to do and learn the principles of printing and look forward to giving things a go myself.

Hi Mark, Just a note to thank you again for such a wonderful week in so many respects. I so enjoyed the locations and the photography. Lots to process and think about again and some new exciting things to try. Your tuition and attention to detail is much appreciated and I always feel inspired again to get out with my camera. See you before too long in Yorkshire.

"Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn."
“Mark Banks is quite simply one of the best teachers of photography I have ever met. His secret is an apparently endless supply of patience, and an acute analytical approach to developing systematic problem-solving tactics in photography, which he makes effortless and fun to learn, whether in the field or in the editing suite. Mark’s artistry, empathy, kindness and charm mean he is always a joy to work with, or to be taught by.”
